Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then located many other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative said the incident left him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
