Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users administering products of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

Based on the social media company, the service has taken down violative content and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to keeping the service secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Operations

Investigations also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with numerous of users, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at home.

After moments of joining one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or past usage.

Product Details and Costs

Within these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to contain new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a injector should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for the messaging service stated it actively monitored harmful content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“Individuals are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has previously encountered patients harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially significant health risks”.
